As a reminder, the tax rate for the wealthy during the highest period of economic growth was as high as 91%, whereas Gates has never paid more than 40%.

How do you think his stocks were juiced if not for the aforementioned monopolistic business practices? What kind of capital gains taxes did he pay on those compared to what labor pays on their income? Why should he pay at a lower rate than people who work for a living instead of holding onto wealth?

But perhaps you misunderstand my point: a healthy society would not allow this kind of wealth disparity, as it is inherently destabilizing.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add monopolistic practices that prevented people from effectively operating competing businesses.

It shouldn’t be his money to spend; it’s been skimmed from all the people he has underpaid and the taxes that he’s avoided for decades.

Billionaires shouldn’t exist, even ones with good PR like Gates.

UFO50 is one of the most astonishing pieces of game design I’ve ever seen; its a master class in elegance.

I completely agree; the buildup and production involved in most RTS games is tedious to me. Close Combat seems like the perfect middle between simulationist war games and RTS chaos. It was actually developed as a Squad Leader game before they lost the Avalon Hill license.

The Combat Mission games were fairly similar, with my favorite feature being a mode where you issue orders in 1 minute increments; you’re watching the battle play out in real time, but it’s still turn based. Edit: Apparently they’re still making these. Here is the one I remember playing most. I still like the Close Combat games better to just jump into though.

The only modern franchise I’ve played that has a similar play style are the Total War games, but I think they realize WWII isn’t a great fit for them.

Oh, I’d forgotten about that game. I actually liked it better than Age of Empires.

I played so much Warlords 2 multiplayer with my siblings when I was a kid. I should check that series out again.

Right, I meant that when doing the conversions the quick and dirty way was to default to the gross palate instead of picking bespoke colors and palettes for everything.

I think that bad CGA palette comes from quick & dirty VGA conversions. This was probably near enough to the changeover to EGA that it was worth doing a good job because there were still quite a few people still using CGA.

Just a guess though.

I’d like to play around with whatever alpha build they made for the original concept of Team Fortress 2.

I love the one that came out (it’s probably my most played game of all time), but those first few screenshots before retooling were captivating when we’d already been waiting so long for the release.
