Yeah I’ve never been able to draw in my entire life, believe me I tried. I have an eyesight impairment and that doesn’t help.

So I’m in two minds about this. I am a software engineer by trade and have an idea for a game I’d like to try making.

The problem is that I don’t even really know how to make games, not do I have any artistic abilities myself. I can’t afford to pay a load of artists for work for a game that might never be finished and might never make money.

So I’m stuck in this hard decision of do I try and make my game, invest a lot of money and potentially lose it all, or do I try and find a publisher who can front the money but lose creative control of my game? Or do I use AI to give me a head start in building something that I can use to garner interest in, in the hope that enough people like it that I can fund the development?

Essentially, AI offers me a way to create something that I would not otherwise be able to create and that’s really hard to accept.

I think you’re putting words in their mouth with that view. That’s not what was said at all.

I read his post as “as shitty as this is, it’s not likely to break out into a full scale war we’ll get pulled into”. It’s not about it being morally okay, or at least I didn’t take it that way.

It doesn’t really matter if people stick around to play a single game, they’ll almost certainly explore other games and stick around for the service. That’s the idea I think they’re going for.

I’d be curious to see how many CoD players stuck around.

Game pass is a big success for them as far as anyone can tell.

Absolutely, when you look at what Linux does get used for and where it’s dominant, there’s shit loads of money getting poured into it.

I’m not complaining about GIMP, I’m complaining about the attitudes people have towards potential users of free software.

Linux is getting more popular because corporations like valve have put the effort into refining the user experience. I’m not just talking about a pretty UI either, I’m taking things like proton that makes playing games on Linux as easy as playing on windows.

I’m not saying there aren’t people out there that demand free labour from volunteers - of course there are; I maintain and have contributed to a few open source projects myself so I know all too well what that’s like.

However, I would say those folks are a very small (albeit vocal and annoying) minority. The vast, vast majority of users simply dismiss Linux/GIMP/Whatever because it’s not suitable for them. They don’t go screaming into GitHub demanding features, they don’t post on Lemmy that the software sucks or otherwise create a fuss, they just gravitate towards the stuff that works for them (usually something proprietary) with the least friction.
